Does ResidentShield Power offer renewable energy?

Yes, ResidentShield Power offers 100% green energy. Our plans are backed by Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), ensuring renewable energy is added to the grid to match your usage.
*In Texas, green energy may also include certain natural gas sources.

Where is ResidentShield Power available?

ResidentShield Power plans are currently available to residents at participating properties across Texas, with other states coming soon.

What is the cost of electricity per kWh?

Electricity costs vary based on your plan and local market conditions. You can review pricing and plan offers in your RentCafe account. Existing customers can review their exact cost per kWh anytime in their account.

How can I compare electricity rates from ResidentShield Power and sign up?

You can view pricing and plan options directly in your RentCafe account. Simply go to Renter Essentials and select Electricity.
Once you’ve chosen the plan that fits your lifestyle, follow the guided steps to sign up.

Is there a fee to sign up?

No. There are no sign-up fees with ResidentShield Power.

Will my service be on when I move in?

Yes, ResidentShield can usually get your power on by your requested service start date. We will reach out to you by email if your enrollment request is rejected for any reason or if you need to provide any required info (like a New Occupant Statement if there is a switch hold). While ResidentShield Power offers same-day power connection where certain conditions are met, we recommend setting up service in advance to avoid any gaps.

Account management

How can I view and pay my electricity bill online?

ResidentShield Power is connected to your RentCafe account. You can view and pay your bill, track monthly energy usage, and manage everything related to your apartment’s electricity in one place. You’ll also receive your bill by email.

Can I set up automatic payments?

Yes. You can enable autopay in your RentCafe account to ensure your electricity bill is always paid on time.

How do I report a power outage?

Power outages are handled by your local utility provider. If your power goes out, call:

  • AEP – Texas Central: (866) 223-8508

Check for updates and estimated restoration times. 

What happens when I move out?

When you move out, ResidentShield Power will automatically cancel service.

What happens at the end of my contract term?

If you are on a fixed rate contract, we’ll notify you before your contract ends, and you can renew onto a new fixed rate contract. If you don’t renew onto another fixed rate contract, then you will default onto a variable rate contract.

Can I cancel my electricity account while I’m renting?

Yes. You can switch to another electricity provider at any time.

Will ResidentShield Power charge me a cancellation fee?

If an early termination fee applies, it will be clearly stated in your plan details before you sign up.

Moving

Can I move or transfer my electricity service with ResidentShield Power?

If you move, you can sign up for a new account with ResidentShield Power if it is available at your new address.

Can I transfer my electricity account to my roommate?

Electricity accounts and contracts cannot be transferred between individuals. If your roommate wants to take over service, they must sign up for a new account through their RentCafe account. You remain responsible for any charges until your roommate’s service start date under their new contract. You may be responsible for an early termination fee (ETF), if applicable. ETFs may apply if your service is cancelled before the end of your fixed-rate contract. See your Electricity Facts Label (EFL) and Terms of Service for details.

Can I switch my electric company if I decide to go with ResidentShield Power?

Yes. Simply sign up for electricity with ResidentShield Power, and we’ll handle the rest.
